Huntsville Hospital Main - Emergency Department
Year Completed: 2008
Project Size: 60,000 Sqft
Huntsville Hospital's Emergency Department Expansion project has grown the existing ED into a state-of-the-art facility that includes all private rooms and a family centered environment. The Emergency Department at Huntsville Hospital is the largest in the state of Alabama and one of the largest in the United States. Significant programming and process analysis were performed by Freeman White and Associates at the beginning of this project to determine how the patient care process could be improved within the current department.
The 35,000 square-foot expansion consists of 55 treatment rooms - 6 of which are Trauma rooms, and 43 of which are universal rooms, capable of treating any kind of emergency outside of a trauma. This expansion has been completed, and the renovation of the 24,000 square feet in the existing Emergency department will be renovated and updated to provide a seamless transition from the old to new. This area will also provide a new Administrative suite and Psych Suite.
In addition to the 91-bed Emergency Department, a Computerized Axial Tomography (CT) Suite is also part of this project and will be constructed west of the existing trauma area. This will allow the Emergency Department direct and fast access for CT and Imaging services, which will help decrease the length of stay in the Emergency Department.
Upon completion, the Emergency Department will be a total of approximately 60,000 square feet and 91 Treatment rooms, including Triage and Trauma. This design will be able to treat 125,000 patient visits a year.
